It is a known fact that umpires often expand the strike zone as the game progresses. We all want to get that call on the outside corner of the plate. This is a technique we often use to see just how far the plate umpire will allow us to go "AWAY" and get the call. I have my catcher move 2 or 3 inches farther out each inning. We keep moving until we reach the limit of the umpire's zone. If we get too far out to get the call, we will move back in 3 inches or to where we got the last call. This tells you how far you can go and what your limits are away. You are testing the size of the plate. Many times the umpire will give your pitcher that close call off the plate. If you never move, you will never know what you can get or how far you can go. Chances are you will be able to work "FAR ENOUGH" away to give you a distinct advantage. You can also move inside to test limits as well. |
